“Food Blogger Deb Perelman Grapples with AI Recipe Summaries”

Date:

Deb Perelman has witnessed significant transformations in the online landscape. The renowned food blogger’s well-established website, Smitten Kitchen, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this summer.

Perelman’s approach has always been to engage with her audience wherever they are present. This is evident in her active presence on various social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok, all of which serve as avenues to redirect readers back to the recipes and narratives featured on her website.

However, a new obstacle has emerged for Perelman in the form of AI-generated summaries. She expressed dismay at encountering snippets of her own recipes being utilized in AI-generated blurbs at the top of search results without her consent. Consequently, Perelman is now seeking protective measures to limit AI interference on her site.

Google recently introduced a revamped search interface, including an “AI Mode,” which facilitates conversational interactions akin to ChatGPT and other AI chatbots. This feature has garnered over a billion monthly users. Furthermore, Google is now prioritizing comprehensive AI summaries over direct website links, enabling users to obtain information without leaving Google’s main page.

The shift towards accommodating web bots for information retrieval poses a significant challenge for content creators reliant on human traffic. The internet landscape is evolving to cater to bots that extract data from websites.

As human web traffic diminishes, Cloudflare data indicates substantial declines in human visits across various sectors between June 2025 and April 2026. Hamzah Khadim, co-founder of Toronto-based internet marketing service Logik Digital, emphasizes the shift in search focus from keywords to conversations. Websites now strive to be a part of AI-generated responses rather than mere search results, necessitating the adoption of GEO (generative engine optimization) strategies to enhance credibility and relevance.

While many content creators monetize their content through social media channels, websites primarily rely on advertising or subscriptions to sustain their operations. The influx of AI bots as website visitors raises concerns about the sustainability of original content creation. Mark Surman, president of Mozilla, questions the future landscape of content creation if incentives for independent content diminish.

The cost implications of AI accessing web content are significant, exemplified by Wikipedia’s infrastructure expenses due to bot requests. Wikimedia Enterprise collaborates with major AI firms to offset these costs by offering bulk access to Wikipedia’s data.

In response to declining web traffic, media companies like Reddit are contemplating adjustments in their relationship with Google. Notably, USA Today’s CEO foresees a paradigm shift in the traditional Google search model. Despite these challenges, there is optimism for a model that preserves the diversity of voices on the open web.

Deb Perelman underscores the unique value of individual creators’ perspectives, emphasizing the importance of context in recipes. She asserts that AI summaries lack the nuanced insights that creators provide, which are essential for a rich culinary experience.
