U.S. President Donald Trump undertook a covert military journey from Turkey recently due to an Iranian threat, necessitating a transfer between aircraft using a catering truck. Initially, the White House indicated that Trump was flying from Turkey to Britain aboard Air Force One after attending a NATO summit. However, shortly after boarding Air Force One, Trump discreetly exited via the catering truck and transitioned to another aircraft bound for Britain, as per sources cited by the Washington Post on Monday.
Confirming the incident on Tuesday, Trump mentioned that the Secret Service and military recommended a switch to a different plane due to a perceived threat, which he claimed did not intimidate him. He minimized the perceived risk to the individuals remaining on the original plane, including White House officials, security personnel, and journalists. Trump stated to reporters upon his return from an event in Ohio that the decision to switch planes was not his to make, citing the existence of a threat, which he did not delve into, mentioning his frequent exposure to such risks.
The transition between planes raised security concerns, with Trump opting for an older Air Force One jet for the return journey from Ankara, where he attended the NATO summit. This decision surprised many, given that a newly renovated jet donated by Qatar had been used for the outbound journey. The choice to switch planes sparked inquiries into the security and cost implications of the newer aircraft, especially amid escalating tensions with Iran.
Before departing Ankara, Trump announced via his social media platform that he would travel to RAF Mildenhall in Britain on the older Air Force One for nostalgic reasons while the newer jet stopped at the same base for U.S. service members to tour. Journalists traveling with Trump on what turned out to be a decoy older jet were advised to keep their window shades closed during the flight, with some White House staff also under the impression that the president was aboard.
When questioned about the closed window shades during the flight, Trump attributed it to a perceived danger, stating, “But if I go, you go. Right?”
