In Nova Scotia, the presence of multiflora roses is causing concern among experts despite their beauty. These roses, known for their pink or white delicate flowers, are fast-growing and are considered a threat to the local ecosystems. Samantha Knight, an ecologist from Fort Needham Memorial Park, highlighted that among the invasive plants they deal with, multiflora roses are the biggest challenge to Nova Scotia’s forest structure.
The rapid growth of multiflora roses allows them to outcompete surrounding plants, eventually dominating an ecosystem with dense coverage. These invasive roses disrupt the physical and biological environment, leading to further ecosystem degradation. David Steele, leading a volunteer group in the Wolfville and Kentville area, described multiflora roses as a “vicious” plant.
Originally introduced from Asia for ornamental rose breeding, multiflora roses were later utilized by farmers to fence in cattle due to their dense and thorny nature. Their seeds spread through various means, including birds that consume and disperse the berries, and through soil disturbance during construction activities.
Despite favoring open and sunny areas, multiflora roses demonstrate adaptability by growing in unexpected locations such as streams. Volunteer groups, like Steele’s, are actively removing these invasive plants using manual methods and tools like chainsaws and extractigators. Homeowners unintentionally contribute to the spread of invasive species by replacing native vegetation with ornamental plants from abroad.
Efforts are underway to survey and remove multiflora roses in Halifax’s park. The strategy involves cutting back the plants to starve them by preventing regrowth, rather than digging them up. Managing invasive species is crucial to preserving resilient ecosystems, as intact habitats provide essential services like food, clean air, and water filtration.
Maintaining biodiversity is paramount, and the removal of invasive species is a top priority to ensure the health of ecosystems. Knight emphasized the importance of preserving natural habitats for a better quality of life compared to degraded ecosystems overrun by invasive species.
