Preston Manning is taking a leading role in addressing Alberta’s historical grievances with Ottawa ahead of the fall referendum by headlining a public forum. The virtual sessions, scheduled for September 19 and 20, will be co-chaired by Manning, the former leader of the Reform Party, and former B.C. premier Gordon Campbell.
The event coincides with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s plan to present 10 questions to voters on October 19, one of which asks if they want the province to remain in Canada or proceed with a second binding referendum on separation.
Manning emphasized that the purpose of the events is to educate and involve voters without descending into the partisan disputes often seen in public meetings. He highlighted the distinct approach of these sessions compared to previous advisory panels like the Alberta Next panel and the Fair Deal panel, which tended to become politically divided.
The forum aims to present various viewpoints without favoring any single perspective, ensuring a broad discussion among speakers. While Alberta is the primary focus, the assembly intends to hold a follow-up session in October and develop recommendations following the referendum. These proposals will be shared with policymakers across Western Canada, as concerns about the federal government’s role extend beyond Alberta.
Manning stressed that the assembly is designed to promote democratic engagement without partisan conflicts, offering a model that could inspire faith in democratic processes, particularly among disillusioned young people. The forum also seeks to highlight Smith’s other nine ballot questions, including proposals related to immigration, Senate abolition, and provincial judicial appointments.
Smith has positioned these proposals as a potential political compromise to address Alberta’s grievances with Ottawa, reaffirming her commitment to Canada. Manning suggested that a yes vote on these propositions could encourage provinces to explore their authority on federal-provincial matters, such as immigration issues.
