“Post-Storm Surge: Snowshoe Hares Thrive on P.E.I.”

Date:

After post-tropical storm Fiona hit Prince Edward Island, snowshoe hares have become more prevalent in the region, according to a wildlife biologist from the provincial fish and wildlife division. Garry Gregory mentioned that Islanders have been observing an increase in the number of “rabbits” in their yards, which are actually snowshoe hares and not rabbits native to the area. While there is no formal tracking data to confirm the population surge, Gregory believes that changes in the landscape post-Fiona have likely contributed to the rise in snowshoe hare numbers.

The storm left behind dense debris in forests and woodlots across the island, providing ideal escape cover for hares. This cover has enabled more hares to survive, potentially leading to a population boost. As the debris breaks down over time, the advantage hares gained will gradually diminish.

Additionally, the storm’s impact on the forest canopy has allowed early successional plants like willows and birch to thrive, providing essential winter forage for snowshoe hares. This new habitat also benefits other wildlife species that rely on early successional growth, such as songbirds and woodcock.

Despite the increase in hares, Gregory mentioned that it does not necessarily translate to a surge in predator numbers on the island. Unlike northern regions where predator populations closely follow hare cycles, predators on P.E.I. are generalists and feed on various prey.

For Islanders encountering hares in their yards, Gregory advised against feeding them as they have abundant natural food sources. Feeding hares could attract them closer to residential areas and pose risks, especially from dogs. Reports of hares with ticks have also increased, but Gregory clarified that the tick species found on hares are not the ones associated with Lyme disease and typically do not pose serious health threats unless the infestation is severe.
