Blue-green algae in Alberta is under constant surveillance by researchers, with a newly launched website enabling the public to easily track these toxic algal blooms at six different lakes. The Algal Bloom Tracker utilizes satellite imagery and lake sampling to provide up-to-date information displayed on a user-friendly map.
Rolf Vinebrooke, an aquatic ecology professor at the University of Alberta and a key figure in the project, explained that the map is regularly updated using satellite images capturing the lakes’ conditions. This real-time monitoring helps individuals identify areas affected by algal blooms and avoid potential health risks associated with them.
Commonly known as blue-green algae, cyanobacteria can rapidly multiply in nutrient-rich lakes during the summer, leading to the formation of green scum in the water. Some blooms can produce toxins harmful to the liver and nervous system if ingested.
The Algal Bloom Tracker currently covers six lakes, including Ethel Lake, Lac La Biche, Nakamun Lake, Pigeon Lake, Sylvan Lake, and Wabamun Lake, offering users insights into historical bloom data and potential risks. The team aims to expand the tracker to approximately 50 lakes across Alberta in the next three years.
When blue-green algae levels exceed safety thresholds, Alberta Health Services issues health advisories to protect public health. Presently, over 25 advisories are active in the province, urging people to avoid contact with affected water bodies to prevent health complications.
While the Algal Bloom Tracker complements official health advisories, it serves as a valuable resource for the public to make informed decisions about recreational activities near affected lakes. Researchers are also using the platform to gain insights into the patterns and impacts of algal blooms on Alberta’s environment and communities.
