“Canada Excludes Seafood from Counter-Tariffs After U.S. Retaliation”

Date:

Finance Canada has excluded fish and seafood products from a list of items subjected to counter-tariffs, a move made just one day after the government responded with retaliatory actions against the U.S. The adjustment was announced late Wednesday night, citing feedback from various industries. The government stated that it is continuously collaborating with Canadian sectors to evaluate the effectiveness of such measures, particularly focusing on industries impacted by U.S. tariffs.

This modification occurred following the federal government’s announcement of counter-tariffs on $27.6 billion worth of U.S. goods. This decision was in response to the new 50 per cent tariffs imposed by the U.S. over the weekend on a similar range of goods after trade negotiations collapsed. Previously, many of the goods on the initial list were seafood products subject to a 25 per cent tax rate.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a proportional response to U.S. products in terms of both value and tariff rates. Concerns were raised earlier in the week by some in the fisheries industry regarding the potential impact of these retaliatory measures on their businesses. One industry group expressed feeling caught off guard by the inclusion of seafood on the tariff list.
