Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon have resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals on Saturday, marking some of the most lethal attacks since a fragile truce between Israel and Hezbollah began in June.
The strikes, confirmed by Lebanon’s Health Ministry and state news agency, targeted a residence on the outskirts of Ansar village, claiming seven lives, including three children, and injuring two individuals. Another airstrike on Deir al-Zahrani village resulted in four fatalities and 17 injuries.
A “framework agreement” was established on June 26 between Israel and the Lebanese government, outlining plans for Israeli forces to retreat from southern Lebanon in return for Hezbollah’s disarmament. Despite efforts for a peace agreement between the two nations, which technically remain in a state of war since Israel’s inception nearly 80 years ago, Hezbollah has declined direct negotiations and was not part of the agreement.
Israeli Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned the airstrikes, stating that they instill fear in residents and hinder stability efforts in the region. He emphasized that the individuals affected were not military targets and urged Israel to cease the escalation to safeguard Lebanese lives and land rights.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun characterized the strikes as a direct challenge to ongoing negotiation efforts and American initiatives aimed at implementing the agreement.
Israeli military actions on the Ali Taher hill were reported to have targeted Hezbollah infrastructure in response to an alleged attack on Israeli soldiers in the area. Despite the truce, Israel has maintained regular assaults on the region, particularly north of the Litani River, an unofficial demarcation line with Israeli military presence to the south.
Hezbollah criticized the Lebanese government for pursuing talks with Israel, accusing the U.S. of complicity in Israeli actions and urging a halt to the ongoing aggression. The group warned that Israel’s aggressive acts would be met with a fitting response.
Recently, two Israeli soldiers lost their lives in an explosion in southern Lebanon, marking the first Israeli casualties since the truce. Both nations have engaged in seven rounds of discussions, with Hezbollah refusing to disarm and expressing concerns over the Lebanese government’s concessions without guarantees of Israeli withdrawal.
The latest conflict between Israel and Hezbollah began in March, following cross-border rocket attacks by Hezbollah in response to U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran. The toll from Israeli strikes in Lebanon has surpassed 4,000 casualties, including numerous civilians, while Israel has reported around 40 military deaths and three civilian fatalities.
