University of Waterloo doctoral student Kaveeshan Thurairajah recently achieved recognition as an Ig Nobel laureate, a humorous take on the prestigious Nobel Prizes, highlighting unconventional and imaginative academic research endeavors. Thurairajah and his team were awarded the Ig Nobel Physics Prize for their innovative work on developing a splash-free urinal. The accomplishment was shared with his supervisor, fluid physicist Zhao Pan.
Their research involved constructing and testing various urinal prototypes, such as the Nautilus and Cornucopia designs. According to Thurairajah, the Nautilus design stood out as the most practical option due to its reduced splash and ease of maintenance compared to the Cornucopia model.
Thurairajah and his colleagues attended the award ceremony in Zurich, donning bright yellow raincoats, ready to celebrate alongside fellow unconventional scientists. Despite the playful nature of their work, Thurairajah emphasized the practical significance of their research in enhancing public restroom facilities for societal benefit.
In addition to Thurairajah’s recognition, Canadian researchers were also acknowledged at the event. A team from the University of Toronto received the Economics Prize for their investigation into unethical behaviors, including the tendency of affluent individuals to pilfer candy from children. Furthermore, McGill University scientists were part of a winning team for their innovative use of mosquito proboscises in high-resolution 3D printing.
The Ig Nobel Awards, organized by the Annals of Improbable Research, have transitioned to Europe after three decades in the United States due to visa-related concerns. Thurairajah emphasized the international collaborative nature of scientific research and expressed support for the event’s relocation to facilitate global participation and knowledge exchange among researchers worldwide.
