Conservative MP Dane Lloyd to Lead Alberta Separation Efforts

Date:

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has selected Alberta MP Dane Lloyd to lead the party’s efforts in the upcoming Alberta referendum on separation. Poilievre revealed this decision in a letter addressed to Lloyd, highlighting the latter’s representation of the Parkland riding since 2017 and his background as a Canadian Armed Forces reservist. Poilievre, advocating for Alberta to remain part of Canada, acknowledged the valid concerns of Albertans and emphasized the importance of listening to them.

In response, Lloyd expressed his honor to contribute to the discussion and reiterated his strong belief in a united Canada via a social media post. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mark Carney appointed Morgan Breitkreutz as the senior adviser overseeing the federal response to the Alberta referendum and managing key projects like the proposed West Coast pipeline.

Separation advocate Mitch Sylvestre noted the alignment of the Conservatives with the “remain” side, attributing it to their interest in retaining Alberta within Canada, given the significant number of Conservative-held seats in the province. Evan Menzies, a former United Conservative Party member, praised Lloyd’s appointment, describing him as a principled individual dedicated to serving the community.

However, political analyst Lori Williams cautioned against Poilievre’s approach of highlighting discontent with Ottawa, citing the potential of fueling separatist sentiments. One of the referendum questions scheduled for October will gauge Albertans’ stance on Confederation membership versus pursuing a binding separation referendum. The remaining queries pertain to immigration and constitutional matters, with Albertans set to cast their votes on October 19.
