Thousands of individuals in Flores, Indonesia, were still awaiting assistance on Monday following a severe earthquake that resulted in a minimum of 68 fatalities, over 200 injuries, and extensive destruction to numerous residences and structures. Residents in East Nusa Tenggara province’s Flores island spent the day grieving for the victims and anticipating aid delivery to isolated communities impacted by the calamity.
The earthquake caused widespread devastation, including collapsed buildings on cars, shattered homes, and obstructed roads due to fallen trees and boulders. Rasyid Jafar, a clothing trader in Reo village, expressed the urgent need for essential supplies like food, medicine, and clean water, stating that his home had been reduced to rubble.
Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto urged prayers for the affected individuals during the Independence Day ceremony in Jakarta, emphasizing solidarity with the disaster-stricken regions. The earthquake, which struck East Nusa Tenggara province early on Saturday with a 10-kilometer depth, resulted in over 4,500 damaged homes, forced 19,000 individuals into temporary shelters, and left 213 individuals injured, as reported by the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). Furthermore, 122 health facilities, 252 schools, and 84 places of worship suffered damage.
Following the earthquake, there were 1,576 aftershocks recorded as of Monday, with approximately 50 of them felt by local residents. The governor of the province declared a state of emergency for 14 days on Sunday to address the crisis.
In Flores, thousands of people camped outside destroyed homes under makeshift tents due to the risk of additional aftershocks. The region witnessed extensive devastation, with fallen trees, landslides, and severely damaged structures. Military and police forces were mobilized to distribute aid across the affected areas, as logistical challenges hampered relief efforts, particularly in remote communities.
Emergency field hospitals were established in Ruteng to cater to earthquake victims, with search and rescue operations ongoing to locate any remaining individuals in need of assistance. Despite the challenging conditions, aid workers managed to reach Palue Island, closest to the earthquake’s epicenter, to provide vital support to thousands of isolated residents.
Indonesia, situated on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is susceptible to seismic activities and volcanic eruptions due to its geographical location. The country has a history of devastating earthquakes and tsunamis, highlighting the urgent need for preparedness and swift response to such natural disasters.
Flores had previously experienced a powerful earthquake and tsunami in 1992, resulting in significant casualties. The nation also faced tragic events like the 2004 Sumatra earthquake and tsunami that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and the Sulawesi earthquake-triggered tsunami in 2018, underscoring the continuous threat posed by natural disasters in the region.
