“Cristiano Ronaldo hints at retirement in Saudi Pro League”

Date:

Cristiano Ronaldo has hinted that the ongoing Saudi Pro League season could mark the conclusion of his illustrious career in professional football. The 41-year-old, who joined Al-Nassr in December 2022 and whose contract expires in June, shared his thoughts with Vogue magazine, expressing doubts about extending his playing career further. “This season is likely my final year in football, and I aim to leave behind a remarkable legacy,” Ronaldo stated.

Having recently tied the knot with his longtime partner, Georgina Rodriguez, Ronaldo reflected on his future plans, emphasizing the need to diversify his interests beyond football. With a remarkable tally of 976 career goals, he highlighted the importance of filling the potential void left by football with various activities. “I have my future all mapped out. There are many endeavors to keep me occupied. While football has been a significant part of my life, it’s essential to explore different avenues to stay fulfilled,” he remarked.

The ongoing 2026-27 SPL season marks Ronaldo’s 25th year as a professional footballer. His exceptional career includes five Ballon d’Or accolades and five UEFA Champions League victories. Ronaldo’s stellar performance last season, scoring 28 league goals, propelled Al-Nassr to clinch the Saudi Arabian title in May, marking his first trophy with the Riyadh-based club and the team’s first league triumph since 2019.

Despite missing Al-Nassr’s season opener post his wedding celebrations, Ronaldo remains committed to the team’s campaign. Coach Ange Postecoglou expressed gratitude for Ronaldo’s continuous support and hinted at his possible participation in the upcoming King’s Cup fixture against Al-Diriyah. Postecoglou emphasized the importance of Ronaldo’s recovery ahead of the match, considering the tight schedule.

Ronaldo’s contemplation on retirement aligns with recent sentiments expressed by his longstanding rival, Lionel Messi, following the passing of Messi’s father. The 39-year-old Messi disclosed uncertainties about his future in football, indicating a potential retirement in the near future. “I used to solely focus on playing football, but now I’m unsure about continuing for much longer,” Messi confessed, echoing a period of introspection among football’s iconic figures.
