An Iranian commercial vessel was attacked early on Sunday near Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in one fatality and four injuries, according to Iranian state media. The incident occurred a day before Tehran planned to update neighboring countries on its efforts to regulate shipping traffic in the area.
The Qeshm governor, quoted by the state-run IRNA news agency, attributed the attack to a “terrorist enemy.” He mentioned that the deceased individual was part of the vessel’s 10-member crew, and the authorities had not yet identified the object used in the attack.
Additionally, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations monitor reported another vessel being targeted by a projectile while passing through the strait, but no further details were provided.
There has been no immediate response from the U.S. military, which has previously targeted Iranian-flagged vessels as part of its blockade on Iranian ports. Recent threats from Iranian ballistic missiles aimed at U.S. warships have added to the regional tensions.
Qeshm Island, positioned approximately 22 kilometers from Bandar Abbas port city, plays a crucial role in Iran’s control over the strait’s maritime traffic. The attack on Sunday occurred amidst ongoing tensions in the region, which has seen increased military activities since the U.S. and Israel initiated a conflict on February 28.
Global energy prices, including oil and natural gas, have surged due to the heightened instability. Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen are also putting pressure on the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key shipping route at the southern end of the Red Sea. Market concerns persist, despite the Houthis claiming to target only Saudi Arabia.
Iran announced a meeting of foreign ministers from regional countries to discuss joint efforts with Oman in managing shipping activities in the Strait of Hormuz. However, Bahrain has opted out of the meeting, raising uncertainties about other participants.
Iran clarified that any agreement with Oman regarding the strait’s management would be conditional on the termination of the U.S. blockade. Commercial ship traffic remains limited in the strait due to ongoing attacks. Iran has proposed implementing transit fees for ships and outlined a route plan passing through Iranian and Omani waters for vessels entering and exiting the Persian Gulf.
