A surprising incident unfolded when a bus driver in London’s Kensal Rise discovered an abandoned monkey on his bus while assisting a mother with a pram. The driver, responding to a “chirping” noise from a laundry bag blocking the walkway, found a marmoset inside. Promptly canceling the service, he returned to the bus depot in Willesden with the unexpected passenger.
The RSPCA was contacted, and they took the marmoset for proper care after its bus journey. Identified as a female common marmoset, the monkey was found inside a concealed bird cage wrapped in a laundry bag. The RSPCA commended the bus driver and Metroline team for their assistance and cooperation in the investigation to locate the person responsible for abandoning the marmoset.
The abandonment is speculated to be linked to new regulations requiring licenses for all primates kept in England. Following a check-up by an exotics vet, the marmoset, now named ‘Oyster,’ was deemed healthy and transferred to a sanctuary with specialized facilities for primates. Oyster is set to be introduced to a male companion and is settling well into her new home.
The RSPCA is conducting an investigation and encourages the public to report any information regarding the person who left the monkey on the bus. Additionally, they urge anyone who may have witnessed someone boarding the bus with the laundry bag to contact the appeal line for assistance.
