Act Fast: Redeem Avios for Flights Before May 27 Changes

Date:

British Airways travelers are advised to redeem their Avios for reward flights before the scheme undergoes changes on May 27. Avios, the loyalty program shared by over 30 leading airlines like British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus, allows users to accumulate points for flight redemptions, albeit with taxes and fees still applicable.

Starting on May 27, the cash portion required for a British Airways reward flight will increase, as highlighted by MoneySavingExpert.com. This adjustment will result in higher costs, while the points needed to redeem a flight will remain unchanged.

MoneySavingExpert.com provided examples of the increased charges post-May. For instance, a business return flight from London to New York will see a rise from 176,000 Avios plus £399 to £499, marking a £100 increase. Similarly, shorter routes such as a one-way economy flight from London to Amsterdam will see a minor hike from 10,000 Avios plus £1 to £2.50.

The organization also cautioned that any modifications made to existing bookings after May 27 will be subject to the new pricing. However, bookings unaffected by changes will maintain the current rates.

To maximize Avios collection, travelers can earn points through various means like booking flights, car rentals, hotels, or shopping via the British Airways Executive Club website. MoneySavingExpert.com advises comparing flight options with other airlines to ensure the best deal before redeeming Avios.

British Airways notes on its website that from May 27, 2026, the cost of Reward Flights will rise, impacting only the cash component of the booking. Prices are based on off-peak dates and availability, with previously booked Reward Flights retaining their current rates.
