“ADHD Cases Soar Among UK Women: Study”

Date:

ADHD cases in the UK have seen a significant increase, particularly among adult women using medication for the condition, which has surged by 20 times. A recent study on Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) featured in the Lancet has brought attention back to the condition. One mother, Lauren O’Carroll, shared her experience of being diagnosed with ADHD at 21 and later learning to manage the challenges in her own life and with her children.

Lauren described her journey of finding a balance that worked for her brain without relying on medication continuously. However, as her responsibilities grew and support decreased, she struggled to maintain that balance. She highlighted the impact of masking ADHD symptoms in children, leading to emotional outbursts at home due to the pressure of conforming at school.

A new Oxford University study examined ADHD medication prescriptions in several European countries, revealing a substantial increase in the UK, attributed to improved awareness of the condition. The study noted a significant rise in ADHD medication use among adults, with a more than 20-fold increase in females and 15-fold increase in males over the age of 25.

After restarting her ADHD medication at 37, Lauren found clarity in understanding her family dynamics better and regulating her emotions effectively. She eventually became a parenting coach specializing in ADHD families after facing challenges in getting her children diagnosed and accessing appropriate support through the NHS.

As the UK government initiates a review of mental health services, including ADHD and autism, concerns have been raised about the overdiagnosis of ADHD and the medicalization of normal struggles. Advocates emphasize the need for timely diagnoses and support for families facing ADHD-related crises, combating the stigma associated with the condition.

Lauren, now actively supporting ADHD families through Positively Parenting, emphasized that receiving a diagnosis was empowering rather than limiting, providing families with essential resources and understanding. She has authored a book to offer parents tools and hope while navigating the challenges of ADHD.
