An Air India flight bound for the UK made an emergency diversion due to adverse weather conditions. Flight AI117, originating from Amritsar in the Punjab region of India, signaled a general emergency known as “Squawk 7700” as it neared Birmingham Airport on Thursday evening. The low visibility caused by heavy snowfall and freezing weather from Storm Goretti made landing challenging, prompting the pilots to divert the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner towards London via Leamington Spa.
The emergency arose from a “Minimum Fuel” situation, as the aircraft’s fuel reserves were running critically low, necessitating immediate action to ensure safety. This declaration granted the flight priority handling from Air Traffic Control. The plane was rerouted to London Heathrow Airport, known for its superior runway facilities and advanced landing systems, ensuring a secure landing.
Birmingham Airport ceased all runway operations due to the severe snowfall, advising passengers to stay updated through airline communications. Multiple flights to various destinations were either canceled or delayed, affecting travel from and to several cities. The airport’s Facebook update confirmed ongoing snow clearance and safety checks, emphasizing passenger security as the top priority.
Numerous flights at Heathrow and Luton Airports were canceled on Friday morning, with East Midlands Airport also briefly closing its runway. Weather warnings persisted, with the Met Office forecasting additional snowfall for Scotland and northern England, posing risks of icy conditions. The forecast predicted significant snow accumulation in specific areas, potentially causing further disruptions, while central and southern England and Wales were expected to experience rain.
