Cooper noted that despite the ongoing trade tensions, Alberta has experienced a relatively low impact on its economy from U.S. tariffs. Experts have acknowledged that while Alberta is not completely shielded from the trade dispute’s effects, it has fared better than some other provinces. Notably, the U.S. continues to increase its imports of Canadian oil, providing some stability for Alberta’s industries.
During a recent visit to Nashville, Tennessee, Cooper and Premier Smith engaged with American officials, who showed a more responsive attitude towards Alberta’s diplomatic efforts. Alberta stands out as the only province without restrictions on U.S. alcohol imports, a position that has been well-received by American counterparts.
Smith’s approach, emphasizing diplomacy over confrontation, has faced criticism from some quarters. However, she remains steadfast in her belief that diplomatic channels offer a more effective path forward. The contrasting strategies between Smith and other provincial leaders like Doug Ford of Ontario reflect differing priorities and goals.
As Alberta prepares for an upcoming election that includes a referendum on separation, U.S. officials are increasingly taking note of the potential implications.
