“Aldi Retains Title as Most Affordable Supermarket”

Date:

Aldi has once again emerged as the most affordable supermarket in the monthly price comparison conducted by Which?. In May, a shopping list comprising 95 items averaged £168.30 at Aldi, narrowly edging out Lidl by £2.28. At Lidl, the same list totaled £170.58 with Lidl Plus, or £170.66 without the loyalty program.

Asda secured the fourth spot with a total of £192.58, followed by Tesco at £196.88 for Clubcard holders. Morrisons averaged £197.50, while Sainsbury’s with Nectar came in at £198.79. Tesco’s price without a Clubcard stood at £202.27, and Sainsbury’s without a Nectar card was £206.18. Waitrose remained the priciest option at £235.49, which is 40% higher than Aldi.

Despite being the most expensive, Waitrose recently announced a £20 million price reduction initiative on essential items. Ocado followed as the second priciest at £217.86.

Which? conducts price comparisons of various grocery items at eight major supermarkets using an independent website throughout the year. The analysis calculates the average price for each item and then aggregates them to determine each store’s overall average price.

The list of 95 items includes both branded and own-brand products such as Cathedral City, Birds Eye, and Hovis. The study factors in special offer prices and loyalty discounts but excludes multi-buy deals. Which? does not disclose the full list of products to retailers.

This latest pricing evaluation emphasizes that consumers can save on groceries based on where they choose to shop. Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, noted the appeal of Aldi and Lidl’s consistent value offerings, highlighting the significant savings potential for shoppers by opting for these budget-friendly supermarkets.
