“Alleged McCann Imposter Julia Wandelt Expresses Regret in Court”

Date:

Alleged stalker Julia Wandelt, who asserted she was Madeleine McCann, expressed regret for receiving approximately £400 from people, acknowledging the questionable nature of the situation. In a court testimony, Wandelt assured Kate McCann of her unwavering determination and recounted what she claimed was a memory related to Madeleine McCann’s abduction.

Detailing her recollection in a message, Wandelt mentioned that McCann had visited the room before the abduction, expressing affection with the words “you love me.” In another message to Kate McCann, Wandelt emphasized her commitment to the truth, stating, “I will never give up, I need you to know I’m telling the truth. I cry when I hear your voice.”

Following a short break, Wandelt resumed her testimony. In correspondence with Ms. McCann, Wandelt acknowledged McCann’s reluctance to engage with her, expressing a desire for a single call to settle matters. When questioned about her persistent attempts at contact, Wandelt explained she believed McCann thought she was mentally unstable and hoped to prove otherwise over time.

Wandelt admitted to contacting Kate McCann primarily to request a DNA test, feeling perplexed by McCann’s reluctance. She speculated that the police had not shared crucial information with the McCanns, leading to the communication gap.

Earlier, Wandelt mentioned traveling to the US for a DNA test, staying with Dr. Fia Johansson, who initially supported her claims of being Madeleine McCann before suggesting a documentary. Subsequently, Wandelt appeared on the Dr. Phil show before returning to Europe.

Under questioning from her barrister, Tom Price KC, Wandelt elaborated on her motives for contacting Kate McCann and her interactions with Karen Spragg, co-accused of stalking the McCann family. Both defendants deny the charges.

Wandelt revealed that she had conversed with Spragg on various topics before traveling to the UK, including trivial subjects like pets. Additionally, she mentioned emailing Mr. Payne about a toy resembling one from her childhood, which she considered as evidence of her doubts about her identity.

Regarding photographs of the McCann family, Wandelt received them from a woman associated with Russell O’Brien, a companion during the family’s 2007 Portugal holiday when Madeleine disappeared. Wandelt assured the court she had not and would not publish the images.

In further questioning, Wandelt explained that her messages to Amelie, seeking help and a DNA test with Kate and Gerry McCann, aimed at discovering her true identity. Responding to accusations of manipulation, Wandelt maintained she was sincere in her efforts to uncover her identity.
