Allied Troops Deploy to Greenland Amid Rising Concerns

Date:

Denmark’s allies, such as Germany, Canada, and the Netherlands, are deploying troops to Greenland for military exercises due to rising concerns about potential threats from Washington and other adversaries.

Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen confirmed the substantial troop deployment following reports by local media. Several NATO countries are increasing their presence on the mineral-rich Arctic territory in response to escalating invasion threats from US President Donald Trump, a position supported by certain members of Congress.

The action is also a reaction to growing aggression from Russia and China in the Arctic, a significant worry for NATO.

“Security in the Arctic is crucial for the Kingdom and our Arctic allies, so it is essential that we, in close collaboration with our allies, enhance our operational capabilities in the region,” stated Lund Poulsen. “The Danish Defense Forces, along with multiple Arctic and European partners, will assess in the upcoming weeks how to enhance their presence and exercise activities in the Arctic.”

The Danish defense ministry is sending Danish aircraft, naval vessels, and personnel for the training drills, which will involve hosting allied forces, flying fighter jets, and conducting maritime security operations, as per reports from the Express US.

This move follows Trump’s recent social media post, emphasizing the United States’ need for Greenland for national security purposes.

Sweden is also sending troops, including officers from the Swedish Armed Forces, to Greenland for exercises, confirmed by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. The deployment is part of the Danish exercise Operation Arctic Endurance and is at Denmark’s request.

France has announced plans to open a consulate in Greenland on February 6 as a political gesture towards Trump amid his annexation rhetoric, according to France24.

German officials have indicated that operations are being coordinated in Copenhagen to avoid U.S. involvement and could commence as early as Thursday. German mountain troops, Navy, and Air Force personnel are considered the main participants for the mission.

Germany’s new Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft landed in Greenland in November.

Earlier, German Defence Minister Boris Postorius urged NATO to protect the broader Greenland region against Russian and Chinese aggression in the Arctic in an article for Die Zeit.

Greenland has consistently expressed its desire for independence and staunchly opposes any prospect of a U.S. takeover, emphasizing that the mineral-rich island is not up for sale.
