An extensive renovation project will lead to the closure of a major European airport for almost a week. Almeria Airport in Spain is set to shut down for six days in February 2028 to enhance its runway, resulting in the cancellation of all scheduled flights during this period. This maintenance marks the first significant work on the runway in two decades.
Located approximately a 15-minute drive from Almeria city center in Spain’s Andalusia region, the airport serves around 800,000 passengers annually, with British travelers accounting for a substantial portion, estimated between 55 and 70 percent of the total passengers.
The runway upgrade is part of a comprehensive 19-month initiative to modernize the entire airport, with a total cost of €29 million (£24.8 million). Construction activities will occur at night between 10:45 pm and 7:10 am the next day, impacting flights scheduled during these hours. Aena, the operator of Spain’s airports, has informed airlines such as Ryanair, easyJet, and Iberia, which operate at Almeria Airport, about the upcoming changes.
As a result of the renovation, airlines will need to reschedule flights or redirect them to alternative airports. Popular routes from Almeria Airport to the UK include destinations like Birmingham, London Southend, Liverpool, Manchester, Bristol, and Leeds Bradford. Other aspects of the project involve enhancements to taxiways, the replacement of over 600 lights, and the installation of 34 new directional signs.
