The Met Office has issued an uncommon amber wind warning in anticipation of the impending arrival of Storm Dave. This fresh alert was released earlier today, just ahead of Storm Dave’s projected impact on various parts of the nation. The national weather forecaster stated that Storm Dave is anticipated to bring disruptive and potentially damaging winds from Saturday night into the early hours of Easter Sunday in the areas covered by the amber alert.
Residents in the 25 locations affected by the amber warning, active from 7 pm today until 3 am on Sunday, should prepare for possible travel disruptions, including air, ferry, and rail service cancellations. The Met Office also cautioned that there is a high likelihood of flying debris causing injuries or posing a threat to life. Weather experts had previously warned that Storm Dave could generate winds of up to 90mph in the northernmost regions.
Coastal residents have been specifically warned about the likelihood of injuries and life-threatening situations due to substantial waves and debris being thrown onto roads, seafronts, and properties. Power outages are also a concern, potentially affecting mobile phone coverage and other services.
The Met Office forecasted, “A period of strong southwesterly, then westerly winds is expected across north Wales, northern England, and southern Scotland on Saturday evening and overnight, easing early on Sunday.” Gusts of 60-70mph are expected widely, with some coastal or exposed areas possibly experiencing gusts reaching around 80mph. Residents under the amber warning are advised to stay indoors where possible to reduce the risk of injury from strong winds.
Before Storm Dave’s arrival, the most recent weather warning involved the Met Office upgrading a previous yellow alert for snow and rain to a 13-hour yellow warning for snow starting from 2 pm today. This warning affects Moray and Highland in Scotland, where up to 6 inches of snowfall is anticipated.
Three additional yellow weather warnings for wind will remain active through Saturday and into Sunday morning in the following regions: North East England, North West England, SW Scotland, Lothian Borders, Wales, and Yorkshire & Humber.
