American doctor Leo Bay and his family are preparing to move from their Utah home to Canada. Bay will be practicing as a family physician on the Sunshine Coast. The decision to relocate was solidified when the family visited Pender Harbour and fell in love with the area. Bay, who has eight years of medical experience, will be joining the Pender Harbour Health Centre at the end of August, where he will provide care to around 1,000 residents in the remote coastal community.
Bay expressed his excitement about the move, emphasizing the opportunity to focus on patient care in Canada. He highlighted some challenges within the U.S. healthcare system that he hopes to overcome by working in Canada. Changes in licensing regulations in British Columbia have facilitated the transition for U.S.-trained doctors like Bay, attracting many healthcare professionals from the U.S. to the province.
The move to Pender Harbour Health Centre will also see another American doctor, Dr. Derek Williams, joining the team. With the addition of Bay and Williams, the health center aims to better serve its community, which has faced physician shortages in the past. The recent influx of healthcare professionals from the U.S. and other countries to the Sunshine Coast is expected to address the ongoing need for medical providers in the region.
