An American hunter narrowly escaped death after being attacked by a grizzly bear, attributing his survival to a split-second decision. Chase Dellwo, aged 26 at the time, encountered a 400lb sleeping male grizzly while hunting with his brother in the Montana wilderness. Reports indicate that Dellwo inadvertently startled the bear, which was just three feet away, as he tried to herd a group of elk towards his brother’s location. Inclement weather conditions, including snow, rain, and strong winds, possibly masked Dellwo’s approach, catching the bear off guard.
Without much time to react, the bear swiftly tackled Dellwo to the ground and bit his head. Despite the intense struggle, Dellwo managed to recall advice from an old article about large animals having sensitive gag reflexes. Acting swiftly, he thrust his arm into the bear’s throat, causing it to release him and retreat. Although injured, Dellwo made it to safety with his brother’s help and received medical treatment for severe wounds, including hundreds of stitches and staples to his head, a swollen eye, and deep leg punctures.
