Andy Burnham has pledged his support for the Mirror’s water safety initiative following a tragic series of drownings that claimed numerous lives. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the risks of open water swimming, particularly in light of 40 fatalities since May 24, spurred by consecutive heatwaves prompting people to seek relief from soaring temperatures.
Joining forces with the Mirror’s campaign, named in memory of Sam Haycock, a 16-year-old who drowned in a reservoir in South Yorkshire in 2021, Mr. Burnham commended the newspaper’s advocacy. Stressing the need for understanding the hazards of open water swimming, he highlighted the significance of proper water safety measures and enhanced swimming education for children as pivotal components of the campaign.
Expressing his full support for the Mirror’s efforts, Mr. Burnham recalled tragic incidents during his tenure as Greater Manchester Mayor, underscoring the rapid onset of danger in open water due to cold temperatures and sudden shocks. Acknowledging the campaign’s importance, he urged the public to heed safety recommendations while enjoying summer activities responsibly.
The Mirror, in collaboration with bereaved families and life-saving organizations, is advocating for drowning prevention to be treated as a national emergency. Notable figures like Olympic champions Becky Adlington and Tom Dean, along with elite swimmer and TV presenter Michael Gunning, have also endorsed the cause.
The initiative calls for ‘Sam’s Law,’ mandating the installation of safety equipment around high-risk bodies of water. Additional demands include a nationwide public awareness drive, stricter penalties for damaging or stealing safety gear, and pressure on relevant authorities to ensure proper safety measures at hazardous water sites. The campaign also calls for the appointment of a dedicated Water Safety Minister for England, paralleling existing roles in Wales and Scotland.
Simon Haycock, father of Sam, expressed gratitude for Andy Burnham’s support, hoping for progress and sustained momentum in the campaign to prevent further tragedies. Vanessa Abbess, advocating in memory of her son Joe who drowned in Bournemouth, echoed the call for urgent government action in appointing a Water Safety Minister to spearhead drowning prevention initiatives.
Highlighting the universality of drowning risks, community engagement, and education, the campaign aims to save lives through widespread awareness and preventive measures. The Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS UK) welcomed the Prime Minister’s endorsement, emphasizing the need for comprehensive water safety education and collaborative efforts to avert future tragedies.
RLSS UK called for increased funding for swimming and water safety education in English schools, aligning with commitments in Scotland and Wales. The organization looks forward to tangible governmental action following the Prime Minister’s support, emphasizing the collective responsibility to effect real change and safeguard lives.
