Jewish communities in the UK are facing a surge in anti-Semitic hate crimes, causing fear among the population, according to a government official. Data released by the Community Security Trust (CST) revealed a significant increase in anti-Semitic incidents, with 1,926 cases reported in the first half of 2026, marking a 20% rise compared to the same period in the previous year.
The statistics represent the second-highest number of incidents recorded by the CST in the first six months of any year, surpassed only by the figures from 2024. Policing and crime minister Sarah Jones condemned the alarming trend, emphasizing that each incident signifies individuals living in fear due to their identity.
Recent months have witnessed a series of disturbing events targeting Jewish establishments in London, such as arson attacks on Jewish community ambulances and a terrorist act of double stabbing in Golders Green. Lord Mann, the government’s independent advisor on anti-Semitism, highlighted the escalating violence associated with anti-Jewish sentiments in the UK, emphasizing the threat it poses to democracy.
The CST reported that the stabbing incident on April 29 resulted in a spike in daily anti-Semitic incidents, with 71 cases recorded in the three days following the attack. Some of these incidents not only glorified the violence but also propagated anti-Semitic conspiracy theories and abuse targeting Jewish individuals.
Moreover, following the onset of the conflict involving Israel and the US on February 28, there was a 71% increase in anti-Semitic incidents in the UK compared to the previous week. A recent case in Brighton involved a man pleading guilty to inciting violence against synagogues and Jewish businesses through a Facebook post, leading to a request for a harsher sentence for a race hate crime.
The Islamic Movement of Companions of the Right, a suspected terrorist group with ties to pro-Iranian networks, has claimed responsibility for several recent attacks, including the torching of Jewish community ambulances in Golders Green. The government, under then-Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, took steps to designate this group and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as threats to national security, aiming to combat their activities targeting the Jewish community.
Mark Gardner, CEO of CST, emphasized the need for collective concern over the incidents outlined in the report, spanning various extremist ideologies. Government representative Ms. Jones reiterated the commitment to protecting Jewish communities, highlighting a significant investment in policing Jewish neighborhoods and collaborative efforts with the CST to safeguard synagogues and community centers. The resolve to combat anti-Semitism remains strong to eradicate this malevolent presence from society.
