Architect Confesses to Eight Murders in Gilgo Beach Case

Date:

An architect has admitted guilt to the murders of seven women, commonly referred to as the Gilgo Beach killings, and has confessed to an additional eighth murder.

Rex Heuermann, aged 62, who has been in police custody since his arrest outside his Manhattan office in July 2023, committed these crimes between 1993 and 2010. The victims’ remains were predominantly discovered in marshlands along the southern Long Island coast, notably at Gilgo Beach. He previously pleaded not guilty to the seven murders.

Heuermann altered his plea on Wednesday and also acknowledged responsibility for the death of an unnamed eighth woman mentioned in the indictment.

The probe into the Gilgo Beach killings commenced in 2010 after law enforcement found four sets of human remains along the beach.

Through DNA analysis and other evidence, investigators identified the victims, most of whom were involved in sex work. The bodies of Melissa Barthelemy, 24, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, Amber Costello, 27, and Megan Waterman, 22 – known as the Gilgo Four – were located at the beach.

Jessica Taylor, 20, and Valerie Mack, 24, were found along Ocean Parkway, several miles west of Gilgo Beach, while a seventh victim, Sandra Costilla, was discovered over 60 miles away in the Hamptons.

The eighth woman, Karen Vergata, was identified in 2023. Her remains were found on Fire Island in 1996, over 20 miles west, and near Gilgo Beach in 2011. Vergata, believed to be 34 at the time of her disappearance, did not have murder charges filed against Heuermann.

In an unexpected turn of events on Wednesday, Heuermann informed Suffolk County District Court in Riverhead, New York, that he intentionally killed Karen Vergata and transported her body to Suffolk County.

In 2022, six weeks after a new police commissioner formed the Gilgo Beach task force, detectives identified Heuermann as a suspect by matching him to a pickup truck witnessed by someone when a victim disappeared in 2010 using a vehicle registration database.

Heuermann resided for many years in Massapequa Park, a 25-minute drive across a causeway spanning South Oyster Bay to Gilgo Beach.

Following this breakthrough, a grand jury issued over 300 subpoenas and search warrants, permitting the task force to scrutinize Heuermann’s life thoroughly. Investigators revealed that mobile phone data indicated his contact with some victims before their disappearances.

Detectives retested DNA recovered with the bodies and examined Heuermann’s internet search history, uncovering his interest in violent torture pornography and the Gilgo Beach killings and investigation.

To secure Heuermann’s DNA, a surveillance team trailed him in Manhattan, where he was employed, and observed him discarding a box of partially eaten pizza crusts into a garbage bin. Investigators retrieved the box and matched DNA from the crust to a male hair found on burlap used to restrain a victim.

After Heuermann’s arrest in 2023, detectives spent over 12 days searching his backyard and residence, uncovering a basement vault containing 279 weapons. On his computer, investigators found what they described as a “blueprint” for the killings, including checklists with reminders to minimize noise, clean the bodies, and eliminate evidence.

Last year, a judge dismissed Heuermann’s attempt to exclude DNA evidence obtained using advanced methods, which prosecutors claimed identified him as the perpetrator.

Heuermann is set to be sentenced on June 17, with expectations of receiving life without parole for the first-degree charges and four terms of 25 years to life for the second-degree offenses.
