“Artemis 2 Crew Prepares for Record-breaking Splashdown”

Date:

The crew of Artemis 2 is set to experience an intense re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere before their upcoming splashdown. Professor Chris Lintott from the University of Oxford highlighted the remarkable speed at which the Orion spacecraft astronauts will return, reaching 25,000mph upon hitting the Earth’s atmosphere due to their trajectory from the Moon.

Following a high-speed entry, the spacecraft will decelerate to a safe landing speed off the coast of San Diego, expected around 1.07am on Saturday morning after traveling at over 30 times the speed of sound.

During their return journey, the Artemis 2 astronauts remained in good spirits, anticipating their splashdown off the coast of San Diego. Their mission set a record for the farthest point in space visited by humans, with a historic reconnection to NASA Mission Control after a brief communication blackout behind the Moon.

Mission specialist Christina Koch expressed relief upon reestablishing contact, emphasizing the significance of communication with Earth after surpassing previous distance records. Astronaut Jeremy Hansen proposed naming Moon craters, including one after Commander Reid Wiseman’s late wife, Carroll, signifying a personal tribute during their mission.

Former astronaut Jim Lovell’s legacy was also honored as he named a crater after his late wife, setting a tradition carried on by the Artemis 2 crew. US President Donald Trump commended the crew for their historic achievements, heralding a new era of lunar exploration.

Despite technical challenges during the mission, such as unusual smells from the spacecraft’s toilet, the crew persevered through potential issues, including suspected ice blockages affecting the toilet’s functionality. Debbie Korth, deputy manager of Nasa’s Orion program, acknowledged the challenges of space bathroom systems, emphasizing the ongoing effort to improve such critical facilities for future missions.
