“Australia Introduces Digital Passenger Cards for Travelers”

Date:

Britons and other vacationers traveling to a popular destination for holidaymakers will no longer need to complete physical passenger cards upon arrival. Instead, individuals arriving at Australian airports will be required to fill out digital cards, applicable to both tourists and residents entering the country.

Over 450,000 passengers have already tested digital-only cards since October 2024 on Qantas flights arriving in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, according to reports from an Australian news outlet. The initiative is set to expand to Qantas flights arriving in Perth and Adelaide by the end of 2026, with plans to implement it at all international airports and seaports within the next 12 to 18 months.

Initially accessible via a webpage, the digital form is anticipated to incorporate in-app functionalities through collaboration with industry partners. The government noted that the trial has shown promising results, describing it as a “significant success.”

Tourism Minister Don Farrell expressed that simplifying and expediting the arrival process will allow visitors to spend more time enjoying Australia’s attractions. The government’s investment of $56.1 million over four years will support the rollout of the scheme, streamlining passenger processing, enabling advanced data collection, and enhancing risk assessment data quality.

Additionally, the government highlighted that the program will facilitate updates and management of global risks and incidents like biosecurity outbreaks. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke emphasized the importance of the modernization effort for Australia’s prosperity and national security, ensuring a seamless border process for visitors and Australian travelers alike.

The funding allocated for the program is expected to aid ongoing efforts to enhance airport and cruise departure procedures, particularly as travel volumes increase in anticipation of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.
