“Australian Woman Shares Ordeal in Chinese ‘Fat Prison'”

Date:

A woman recently revealed her experience of residing in a Chinese ‘fat prison’ where she underwent a strict 28-day program. TL Huang, an Australian expat, was confined in the weight loss facility situated in Guangzhou, China. The facility enforced a ban on unhealthy foods like instant noodles and tightly controlled the living conditions. Inmates were housed in dormitories with stringent security measures, including tall walls, gates, and electric fencing, and were not permitted to leave the premises.

Describing the harsh regulations, Ms. Huang emphasized the controlled daily routines and restricted movements within the facility. She narrated her decision to join the camp, following her mother’s suggestion due to weight gain from consuming takeout meals. Ms. Huang recounted the loss of personal freedom as she adhered to rigorous schedules of weigh-ins, exercise sessions lasting four hours, and monitored meal plans featuring limited portions of nutritious dishes.

During her stay, Ms. Huang fell ill with flu and a high fever, requiring hospitalization, which hindered her ability to meet the demanding exercise regime. These ‘fat prisons’ have been established in response to China’s escalating obesity rates, with over half of the adult population classified as overweight or obese. The National Health Commission projects that this figure could rise to two-thirds by 2030, prompting individuals to enroll in such programs at a significant cost.

Ms. Huang disclosed paying $600 (£298) for her program, covering accommodation, meals, and workouts. Despite the challenging experience, she expressed contentment with the decision, citing the need to establish healthier habits and shed excess weight. Through documenting her journey at the camp, she highlighted the discipline enforced, such as weighing meals to monitor calorie intake. Eventually, Ms. Huang successfully shed 6kg during her four-week stay, attributing her accomplishment to the structured routine and newfound lifestyle insights gained from the experience.

Reflecting on her time in the ‘fat prison,’ Ms. Huang acknowledged the intensity of the program but emphasized the personal growth and sense of achievement upon completion. She encouraged individuals considering such programs to view them as a positive step towards enhancing their health and wellness journey, underscoring the importance of cultivating sustainable habits and knowledge for long-term progress.
