A tragic incident unfolded as a seven-year-old girl with autism, Skylar Hopson, was discovered dead in a retention pond in Pearland, Texas, just hours after she was reported missing. The young nonverbal girl had left her home wearing a tie-dye dress and carrying an iPad, prompting her mother to report her disappearance around 9.40am on Wednesday. Following the report, local authorities launched an extensive search operation, including deployment of search teams, K9 units, and drones, along with issuing an amber alert.
After an extensive search effort in collaboration with the Houston Police Department, Skyler’s iPad signal led search teams to a nearby retention pond where her lifeless body was found on Wednesday afternoon. Pearland public information officer Chad Rodgers confirmed the discovery, stating that a dive team recovered Skyler’s body around 2.45pm, more than five hours after she went missing. Investigations are now underway to determine how she reached the pond and whether she had intended to go there.
Officer Rodgers mentioned that the tragic circumstances of Skyler’s death were not unexpected, as drone teams had suspected a water-related incident early on. He emphasized the importance of exploring additional camera footage to trace Skyler’s movements leading up to the pond. Neighbors were urged to review their doorbell cameras for any sightings of the girl, with one resident providing a video of Skyler walking down the street with her iPad.
Expressing deep sorrow over the outcome, Pearland Police Department acknowledged the community’s support and assistance during the search operation. The department extended gratitude to local resources, including TEXSAR and residents, for their contributions in aiding the search efforts.
