He announced the cancellation of the Triathlon National Championships in Kelowna on Aug. 9 due to health concerns related to heavy smoke in the air.
With Environment Canada issuing air quality alerts for BC’s southern and central Interior regions, the impact of high smoke levels on health has been highlighted. The cancellation of events like the Argus Apple triathlon and the Fat Dog 120 trail race has left many athletes disappointed. The decision to cancel these events was made to ensure the safety of participants and volunteers amidst the hazardous conditions caused by wildfires.
Race director Erik Bird emphasized the safety risks posed by the ongoing wildfire activity around Manning Park, leading to the cancellation of the Fat Dog 120 race. While registrants will receive a partial refund, the financial implications of the cancelation are still being assessed, affecting staff, vendors, local businesses, and athletes.
In response to the wildfire situation, the Bush Babes Trail Running organization has secured event cancellation insurance for its upcoming races to provide full refunds to registrants if necessary. Despite event cancellations and smoky conditions, tourists are still visiting Kelowna, though with some hesitation. Tourism Kelowna is working to address concerns and promote indoor activities to mitigate the impact on tourism.
While some events have been canceled in other areas, the Kamloops Rib Festival is proceeding as planned, with chefs adapting to the smoky conditions. However, health risks led to the cancellation of the dragon boat races that were scheduled to take place alongside the festival.
