In the early hours of this morning, a criminal brandished a piece of broken glass threateningly towards a baby during a carjacking incident in Belfast city center. The child, accompanied by its mother, was in the back seat of a vehicle while the father, who was driving, stepped out to make a delivery at approximately 3:50 am.
Two individuals approached the parked car on foot, one of them taking control of the driver’s seat and driving off with the woman and child still inside. Shortly after, the perpetrator turned back and menacingly held what appeared to be a shard of broken glass to the baby’s head, forcing the woman out of the vehicle before fleeing the scene.
Law enforcement officials deemed the event as “absolutely shocking” and “extremely distressing,” prompting an appeal for information and witnesses to assist in the investigation. Detective Sergeant McVeagh described the harrowing experience as traumatic for the victims but thankfully, they were unharmed. The abandoned vehicle was later discovered on a nearby residential street, approximately one mile from the site of the carjacking.
