Balsam fir trees in New Brunswick are exhibiting a concerning trend of turning red and dying following the unprecedented drought last summer. This alarming phenomenon has raised worries about the future of these iconic trees in the province.
Professor Anthony Taylor, a forestry researcher at the University of New Brunswick, has been closely monitoring the situation. He has been receiving reports from woodlot owners and witnessing the distressing effects firsthand as the lush balsam firs, often sought after as Christmas trees, gradually shift to a red hue, dry out, and eventually perish.
According to Taylor, the observed pattern aligns with previous instances after hot, dry summers. He emphasized the detrimental impact of warm, dry conditions, such as the severe drought experienced the previous year, on the growth capacity of balsam fir trees.
Having extensively studied the influence of climate change on New Brunswick’s forests over the years, Taylor noted similar die-offs of balsam firs following exceptionally hot, dry summers in 1986 and 2018. He explained that during drought conditions, the trees halt the photosynthesis process prematurely, hindering their growth and ability to generate essential energy reserves for sustaining basic metabolic functions and producing defense compounds.
The shallow root system of balsam firs further exacerbates their vulnerability during dry periods, making it challenging for them to access sufficient water. Peter McKeil, a woodlot owner who noticed the initial signs of damage to his balsam firs in June, described a concerning progression of red discoloration from the lower branches upward. With new red spots emerging daily, indicating ongoing die-off, McKeil estimated a loss of approximately 100 trees thus far.
While McKeil has salvaged some of the deceased trees for lumber, he acknowledged the need to adapt his harvesting practices to maximize the remaining fir trees’ value before further losses occur. Expressing a grim outlook due to worsening climate change, McKeil suggested that the species may face an uncertain future, especially in southern New Brunswick.
Taylor emphasized the urgency for climate action, underscoring the visible impact of a changing climate on the province’s balsam firs. He likened the situation to a canary in a coal mine, serving as a tangible indicator of climate change’s repercussions. Taylor urged for a shift away from fossil fuel reliance and excessive deforestation to combat climate change effectively, emphasizing the need for swift and decisive measures to address these environmental challenges.
