Barry Hearn strongly criticized Conor Benn for his abrupt departure from Matchroom to Zuffa Boxing without even acknowledging Eddie Hearn’s attempts to discuss the situation. Benn, aged 29, officially confirmed the split on Friday and has now chosen to be represented by the Saudi-backed promoter led by UFC president Dana White.
Despite a decade-long partnership with Matchroom, Benn chose to sever ties with the promoters who supported him through thick and thin, including during a previous drug-related incident. Eddie Hearn had praised Benn after his victory over Chris Eubank Jnr last year.
Benn justified his move to Zuffa by stating that they presented an opportunity he couldn’t turn down. However, when Eddie Hearn tried to engage in dialogue, Benn showed no interest, much to Hearn’s dismay.
Expressing disappointment, Barry Hearn remarked on Benn’s decision, emphasizing that loyalty should not be forsaken for monetary gains. He highlighted the unity and dedication of the team that had stood by Benn, lamenting the perceived lack of gratitude in Benn’s actions.
Joining Zuffa alongside cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia, Benn’s decision signifies a significant shift from the path Eddie Hearn had envisioned after Benn’s victory over Eubank Jnr.
Barry Hearn disclosed that when Eddie suggested a meeting to discuss the situation, Benn opted to involve lawyers, a move that Hearn found appalling given their long history together.
Benn, who is in line to challenge for the WBC welterweight title, defended his choice by stating that rejecting the lucrative offer would have been illogical.
While acknowledging that Benn has the right to explore new opportunities, Hearn Sr. emphasized the importance of maintaining standards and mutual respect in professional relationships.
