The BBC is reportedly considering utilizing iPlayer streaming data to identify individuals who have not paid for a TV licence. Currently priced at £174.50 per year, a TV licence is mandatory to watch or record live TV shows from any channel, including BBC iPlayer content, whether live or on catch-up.
According to The Telegraph, there are plans to link up to 40 million BBC iPlayer accounts with a database to monitor TV licence ownership at specific addresses. When signing up for a BBC iPlayer account, users are required to provide their email address, date of birth, and postcode.
In the fiscal year 2024/25, the BBC earned £3.8 billion from TV licence fees. However, it is estimated that non-compliance with payment is costing the corporation up to £550 million annually.
A spokesperson from TV Licensing mentioned to The Telegraph their ongoing efforts to enhance licence fee collection by leveraging available data to better understand viewing behaviors and BBC service usage.
Notably, a TV licence is not required for catch-up viewing on platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, ITVX, Disney Plus, YouTube, All 4, or My5. Nevertheless, a licence is necessary for watching live content on these services, with potential penalties of up to £1,000 for unlicensed live TV viewing.
Certain individuals, such as those receiving Pension Credit and aged 75 or over, qualify for a free TV licence. Additionally, students residing away from home may be covered under their parents’ licence if watching on specified devices like phones, tablets, or laptops.
Discounts on TV licences are available for households with blind or severely sight-impaired residents, as well as for those in residential care or sheltered accommodation. The TV licence fee typically increases annually in April based on the previous September Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate.
While the September inflation rate for this year stands at 3.8%, leading to a potential TV licence fee rise to over £180, no official confirmation regarding the fee adjustment in April has been issued by the Government.
