High street jewelry retailer Beaverbrooks will be shuttering all 83 of its stores on Boxing Day and providing its employees with an additional week of pay. This closure on December 26 has become a customary gesture by Beaverbrooks to allow its staff to unwind and enjoy time off after a year of hard work. The family-owned chain has also recruited 50 seasonal staff for various roles in its head office and selected stores this holiday season.
Established in 1919 by the Adlestone brothers Isaac, Harry, and Maurice, Beaverbrooks opened its first store in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Anna Blackburn, Managing Director at Beaverbrooks, emphasized the company’s commitment to prioritizing its employees, stating, “We believe that putting our colleagues first in every decision we make is key to creating a stronger, more engaged workforce, which helps our people to deliver exceptional levels of customer service.”
Beaverbrooks aims to set an example for other businesses by focusing on staff well-being. The company is pleased to welcome seasonal hires to support its teams during the busy festive period, ensuring excellent customer service standards are maintained.
In solidarity with Beaverbrooks, other retailers are also opting to close their stores on Boxing Day. Home Bargains will once again keep its stores closed for three consecutive days during the Christmas season, allowing its dedicated staff to rest. M&S initiated the practice of closing its stores on Boxing Day in 2020 as a gesture of appreciation to its employees for their hard work during the pandemic. Aldi has confirmed the closure of all its stores on Boxing Day, with operations resuming on December 27.
These closures are part of a growing trend among retailers to prioritize employee well-being and offer them time off to spend with family and friends during the holiday season.
