“Behind the Scenes of a Luxury Cruise Ship”

Date:

Cruises are renowned for their seamless experiences, offering island-hopping adventures, delightful cocktails, and inclusive dining. However, beneath this facade, a dedicated team of staff works tirelessly to maintain the highest standards behind the scenes.

During my inaugural Caribbean voyage aboard the Marella Discovery cruise ship, I had the opportunity to explore areas typically off-limits to passengers. After familiarizing myself with the expansive 11-deck vessel boasting nine restaurants, six bars, and various entertainment options like mini-golf, an escape room, and a climbing wall, I delved into a different perspective of the ship.

Here are the insights I gathered during my exclusive tour:

The bridge, often concealed from most passengers, serves as the command center where the Captain and crew oversee navigation, from intricate docking maneuvers to guiding the ship across vast ocean expanses. The view from the bridge was unparalleled, offering a unique vantage point as our ship berthed among opulent superyachts, adding a touch of pressure to the crew’s precision.

Venturing into the engine room revealed a bustling team managing five engines, two massive propulsion motors, and numerous air-conditioning systems round the clock. Modern cruise ships like the Marella Discovery efficiently distribute power to accommodate various demands, ensuring essentials like lighting, kitchen operations, and cabin air conditioning are operational. Maintaining optimal efficiency is crucial, with the ship consuming approximately 8,000 liters of fuel per hour at maximum speed.

In the laundry room, staff handle around 1000 towels daily using industrial-grade machines and steam presses, not only catering to passengers but also ensuring the crew’s pristine white uniforms are impeccably maintained with unique labels for identification.

As a theater enthusiast, stepping onto the Broadway Show Lounge stage provided a behind-the-scenes glimpse into performers’ multitasking skills, from managing props to handling hair and makeup themselves. The camaraderie among the crew was evident, fostered by months of working together at sea, creating a familial bond.

Despite feeling the ship’s motion more acutely as a cruise novice, the crew reassured me that the tilt was minimal due to stabilizers, limiting the ship’s sway to a maximum of one degree on either side for passenger comfort.

Exploring the ship’s galley, the bustling hub where thousands of meals are prepared daily, showcased a team of 101 chefs dedicated to serving 1800 passengers and 700 crew members with precision. The meticulous organization, including detailed recipe lists ensuring menu consistency across the TUI fleet, underscores the culinary excellence onboard. Notably, breakfast sees the highest demand, with passengers consuming around 7000 dishes daily, with eggs being a crowd favorite.

Marella Cruises offers a seven-night Tropical Isles round trip from La Romana, Dominican Republic on Marella Discovery starting from £1573 per person, inclusive of flights, transfers, and more. For more information, visit tui.co.uk/cruise.
