A well-known hotel and dining establishment abruptly ceased operations after serving customers for 46 years, causing distress among patrons. Guys Thatched Hamlet, situated near Bilsborrow in Lancashire off the A6, has officially closed its doors. The establishment, which featured a 65-room hotel along St Michael’s Road by the canal, has terminated all its employees.
A closure notice has been affixed to the hotel’s entrance, confirming the shutdown. Encompassing nearly 14 acres, the property included various amenities such as a tavern, eatery, sports pavilion, function rooms, a cricket ground, bowling green, and three parking lots.
According to the Lancashire Post, a statement on the notice read: “After 46 years of operation, we can confirm the closure of Guy’s Thatched Hamlet. This decision was challenging and well-considered. We express our deep gratitude to our loyal customers, dedicated staff, and supportive suppliers throughout the years.
“For many individuals, the hamlet held significant emotional value, and as it undergoes a period of transition, our priority is to gracefully conclude this chapter.”
Heartbroken customers have taken to social media to share their sentiments. One individual reminisced, “Where my husband proposed to me in 2012,” while another lamented, “I also got engaged here in 2015. Such a loss.”
Another saddened patron mentioned, “I have been a regular at Guys for years, even proposed to my partner in the restaurant to cheers from fellow diners. It’s sad to see it go, and hopefully, someone will preserve its essence.”
The Wilkinson family has managed the business since 1980 and put it up for sale last year, with an approximate net turnover of £4.2 million. The property, known for its 65 en suite guest rooms, attracted both leisure and commercial clientele due to its strategic location near the Lake District, Fylde Coast, and the Trough of Bowland.
Furthermore, the property’s accessibility from the M6 and M55 motorways made it a prime location for business traffic from the surrounding areas. Renowned throughout the North West of England, Guy’s Thatched Hamlet boasted a year-round clientele, with peak seasons during summer and festive periods.
