Ben Stokes has been removed from the England squad for the second test against New Zealand due to an ongoing investigation involving a nightclub incident. Reports indicated that Stokes was involved in a altercation with Gus Atkinson, a security personnel, and a Saracens rugby player. In response to the investigation, the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced that Stokes has been relieved of his captaincy and excluded from the team.
A statement released by the ECB on Wednesday confirmed that due to the ongoing investigation, both Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson will not be considered for selection in the upcoming Rothesay 2nd Test match against New Zealand at the Kia Oval starting on June 17. Yorkshire batsman Joe Root will take over as the Interim Captain for the team, while Sussex fast bowler Jofra Archer and Essex batsman Jordan Cox have been included in the squad.
As a result of these developments, vice-captain Harry Brook has been passed over, with Joe Root assuming the captaincy role. The first Test match between England and New Zealand was won by England by 115 runs, and the second test is scheduled to commence at The Oval next week.
The ECB is currently investigating a breach of team protocols following the conclusion of the first Men’s Test against New Zealand. Stokes and Atkinson were present at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning when the incident occurred. Further information is being sought, and updates on the squad for the second Test will be provided in due course.
Additionally, Saracens issued a statement acknowledging an incident involving one of their academy players. The club is conducting a thorough investigation in collaboration with relevant authorities and individuals. No further comments will be made until the review process is complete.
