“Beware: Cyclosporiasis Outbreak Hits Tourist Hotspots”

Date:

British travelers have been alerted to a food caution due to an upsurge in cyclosporiasis cases, leading to severe diarrhea. Mexico and the US are among the popular vacation spots affected by this bug.

Cyclosporiasis arises from an infection caused by a tiny parasite known as Cyclospora, commonly transmitted through the consumption of contaminated food or water containing the parasite from human feces.

Symptoms of this infection include watery diarrhea and explosive bowel movements, lasting for weeks. Travel Health Pro highlighted that most cases in the UK have been associated with trips to Mexico, emphasizing that Cyclospora is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, with summer travel abroad being a common link for infections in the UK.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 843 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis in the US from May 1 to July 9 this year, with no fatalities but 86 hospital admissions.

In terms of preventive measures, Travel Health Pro advised on safe eating practices while abroad, emphasizing the risk of infection through consuming contaminated food or water, particularly fresh produce like soft fruits, lettuce, and herbs such as coriander or basil.

It is crucial to maintain good food and water hygiene to minimize the risk of Cyclospora infection, even when staying at high-end resorts. Symptoms usually manifest about a week after consuming contaminated items, with mild infections typically self-resolving, though they may persist for weeks, especially in individuals with compromised immune systems.

If experiencing symptoms of Cyclosporiasis while overseas, seeking prompt medical attention is recommended. In the UK, urgent GP appointments should be sought if diarrhea occurs after recent travel abroad, while NHS 111 can provide assistance. If still abroad, immediate medical advice is advised.

Cyclospora infects the small intestine, causing watery diarrhea and frequent, sometimes explosive bowel movements. Vigilance in seeking medical help and adhering to hygiene practices can aid in managing and preventing this infection.
