Britons planning to travel abroad this summer are being cautioned against purchasing hazardous travel adaptors that pose risks of electric shocks or even electrocution. A recent assessment by Electrical Safety First revealed that 14 travel adaptors bought from various platforms like Ali Express, eBay, Amazon Marketplace, and TikTok Shop failed essential safety tests. The charity highlighted that over 10,000 of these unsafe adaptors might have already been distributed to unsuspecting consumers.
During the evaluation, it was discovered that some travel adaptors had multiple exposed plug pins simultaneously, presenting a grave danger if touched with wet hands. Additionally, instances were found where plug pins could snap off inside a socket, while other adaptors lacked safety features like shutters or fuses, and some had excessively large plug pin holes, increasing the risk of contact with live electrical components.
Giuseppe Capanna, a product safety engineer at Electrical Safety First, emphasized the importance of being cautious while shopping for travel essentials. He advised consumers to opt for travel adaptors from reputable retailers to ensure safety and avoid the potential hazards associated with substandard products.
Following the alarming findings, actions have been taken by the respective platforms. AliExpress has removed the identified unsafe travel adaptor listings and is reaching out to affected customers for a recall. eBay is conducting thorough checks to eliminate similar listings, and Amazon has already taken down the flagged products. TikTok has also followed suit in removing the listings to prevent further distribution of unsafe adaptors.
Andrew McConnell, a spokesperson for the UK Civil Aviation Authority, echoed the need for travelers to exercise caution when purchasing electrical devices for travel purposes. McConnell emphasized the significance of using reliable products and adhering to safety guidelines to mitigate risks while traveling.
In light of these safety concerns, it is crucial for travelers to prioritize safety by choosing reputable retailers for their travel essentials to ensure a secure and worry-free travel experience.
