“Beware Mediterranean Hazards: Heatwave, Pufferfish, and More”

Date:

British tourists preparing for a trip to the Mediterranean are facing multiple warnings, not only about the scorching heatwave forecasted to hit the region with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees but also about potential risks related to the Entry & Exit System (EES). Among these concerns, a new hazard has emerged in the form of the silver-cheeked pufferfish.

The silver-cheeked pufferfish, scientifically named Lagocephalus sceleratus, is native to the Indian Ocean but has recently been spotted in the Mediterranean after likely entering through the Suez Canal. This fish is known for its razor-sharp teeth capable of causing serious injuries if it comes into contact with swimmers.

While the chances of encountering these pufferfish are statistically low, tourists are being advised to stay vigilant when swimming in the waters. Incidents have already been reported, including a Greek woman who was bitten by one of these fish near the Varkiza resort in Athens earlier this year.

Experts from the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research have highlighted that most attacks occur when individuals try to touch or feed the fish, resulting in severe injuries like lost fingers or toes. The Greek Red Cross has issued guidelines on how to respond to pufferfish injuries, emphasizing immediate medical attention, wound cleansing with soap and water, and applying pressure to stop bleeding.

As holidaymakers gear up for their vacations, concerns are not just limited to underwater threats. Europe is bracing for soaring temperatures, with some areas expecting highs of 44°C. Countries like France have already implemented measures such as banning alcohol at state-sponsored events to mitigate the impact of the heatwave.

Germany has issued heat warnings as temperatures are set to rise above 30°C, while Portugal anticipates peak temperatures midweek. Italy and Spain are also preparing for intense heatwaves, with storm alerts in effect across the continent.

In the UK, temperatures are not expected to reach the extreme levels seen in other parts of Europe but could still peak at around 38°C, nearing the 2022 heatwave levels. The United Kingdom Health Security Agency has issued an amber health heat alert for several areas, including London, as the Met Office forecaster warns of prolonged high temperatures, posing health risks due to consecutive tropical nights with temperatures above 20°C.
