Virgin Media O2 users are being warned about a new email scam circulating in the UK. The fraudulent emails are exploiting the recent closure of O2’s 3G mobile platform, which has been replaced by faster 4G and 5G services. While most customers will not be affected by the platform change, scammers are attempting to deceive users into thinking they need a SIM card upgrade.
The deceptive email, designed to look official, has the subject line “Alert: Switch to Your New 5G SIM for a Faster, Stronger Network.” Virgin Media O2 emphasizes that these messages are not legitimate and should be deleted without clicking on any links or replying. Recipients are advised to report any suspicious emails to phishing@virginmediao2.co.uk.
This phishing scam involves criminals impersonating trusted organizations to extract sensitive personal information from individuals. In some cases, scammers may send a SIM card by courier and request the recipient to activate it with a PIN. The email may also prompt users to log in to the O2 app with a provided password and contain a “Contact Us” button that could lead victims directly to the fraudsters.
If successful, scammers could access private accounts or gather enough personal data to commit identity theft or other fraudulent activities. To avoid falling victim to such scams, it is recommended to verify the legitimacy of emails from service providers by contacting the company directly using official contact information or seeking a second opinion from a trusted source before taking any action.
