“Beware: Scam Texts Targeting EE Users on the Rise!”

Date:

EE mobile users are being cautioned about a resurgence of a scam text message. Cybersecurity experts have observed an increase in urgent messages targeting EE customers, claiming that their EE reward points are at risk of expiration unless immediate action is taken.

According to Bitdefender, cybercriminals are posing as the popular EE network to entice individuals into clicking on malicious links that lead to fake websites. These fraudulent sites are crafted to capture login credentials, enabling the scammers to profit illicitly.

The success of this scam lies in creating a sense of urgency, as criminals anticipate that users will act hastily without due consideration. Bitdefender highlighted the tactic of setting tight deadlines to pressure recipients into believing they are about to lose something valuable, thereby manipulating them into clicking the fraudulent link.

EE emphasizes that authentic alerts will only be visible within official EE accounts and not through unsolicited text messages. Any message pressuring quick action or displaying a countdown should be viewed as a warning sign. Suspicious texts should be forwarded to 7726 and subsequently deleted.

This type of scam has previously targeted EE customers, with reports of convincing fake messages circulating earlier in the year. Users have shared their experiences of inadvertently engaging with these scams by following links to seemingly legitimate EE websites.

EE has clarified that it does not operate a points program and has provided examples of scam messages for reference. The company advises users to refrain from clicking on unfamiliar links in text messages, responding to suspicious messages, calling the numbers provided in such messages, or sharing personal or financial information.

EE users are strongly advised to exercise caution and vigilance to avoid falling victim to such scams.
