Scammers are utilizing a new approach to target chat app users by sending deceptive voting messages. Falling for this scheme can lead to account hijacking, as warned by cybersecurity experts at Kaspersky.
The fraudulent tactic exploits popular voting contests that allow users to express their preferences for sports stars or celebrities. Rather than presenting legitimate voting opportunities, these messages contain links redirecting users to fake websites designed to steal personal information.
Kaspersky highlighted that the scam involves directing users to a seemingly authentic webpage featuring a voting contest with images of athletes and a “Vote” button. The page displays fake vote totals and user participation numbers to create a sense of credibility and encourage engagement.
Individuals who fall for the scam risk divulging their usernames and private 6-digit codes, enabling fraudsters to take over their accounts. Tatyana Shcherbakova, Web Content Analyst at Kaspersky, emphasized the importance of vigilance and awareness to avoid such pitfalls.
To safeguard against account hijacking scams, Kaspersky recommends the following precautions:
– Enable two-step verification on WhatsApp to enhance security.
– Verify the authenticity of websites before entering personal information, especially from unsolicited links.
– Never share verification codes, as WhatsApp does not request them.
– Utilize trusted security software to identify and block malicious websites and links.
