A young adult who had been involved in a significant family altercation in the heart of Birmingham has been apprehended and incarcerated.
Thomas Sweeney junior, who was due for sentencing in August 2024 following a tumultuous incident in the Gay Village a year earlier, has been captured after fleeing the court alongside his co-accused mother Ellen Sweeney and father Thomas Sweeney senior. The trio had pleaded guilty to violent disorder but failed to appear for their sentencing, prompting authorities to believe they had fled back to Ireland.
After evading capture for over a year, Sweeney junior, now 19 years old, was arrested on January 8, as confirmed by Birmingham Crown Court. The arrest occurred when Cheshire Police, executing a warrant, stopped a vehicle he was driving on the M6 southbound.
The prosecutor, Alura Bather, revealed that Sweeney junior initially provided a false name but was eventually identified and arrested for multiple outstanding matters. Despite claiming he intended to surrender, the presiding Judge Kershaw rejected his explanation.
Judge Kershaw decided to extend the punishment beyond standard guidelines, sentencing Sweeney junior to an additional two months on top of his existing 28-month term. The family’s violent outburst, involving multiple family members, occurred after leaving a nightclub in the Gay Village, leading to assaults on several individuals and causing chaos in the city center.
Sweeney junior’s involvement included physical attacks on multiple individuals, including a taxi driver. Ellen Sweeney and Thomas Sweeney senior are still at large, facing legal consequences for their roles in the brawl.
