“Bomb scare at Torquay beach resolves peacefully”

Date:

A significant discovery led to the closure of Torre Abbey Sands, the main beach in Torquay, Devon. The beach and surrounding roads were cordoned off when a large metal cylinder was found by members of the public around 4pm, triggering an emergency response.

A bomb squad arrived at the scene at approximately 6.50pm. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit assessed the object and determined it to be non-threatening. Police began removing the cordons shortly after 7pm, reopening the area. Witnesses mentioned the closure of the seafront to both vehicles and pedestrians.

Traffic monitoring site Inrix reported the closure of A379 Torbay Road in both directions from 4.50pm due to the incident. Despite the initial removal of the cordon at 7pm, it was later reinstated, with emergency services evacuating the beach once again before fully lifting the cordon.

Details about the object remain unclear, with inquiries directed to the Devon and Cornwall Police for further information.
