Ricky Hatton, the renowned boxer, was discovered deceased at his residence in Manchester last year with injuries that indicated a hanging incident, a pathologist confirmed during an inquest. The cause of death was determined to be hanging, with no signs of any suspicious circumstances surrounding the tragic event. Friends and family, including his son Campbell, were present at Stockport coroner’s court for the commencement of the inquest into his passing.
Among those in attendance were long-time friend and manager Paul Speak, as well as Ricky’s father Ray, brother Matthew, and former partner Jennifer Dooley. The former world champion was found at his £1.7 million home in Hyde, Greater Manchester, on September 14, 2023, at the age of 46.
The inquest revealed that Paul Speak discovered Ricky unresponsive at his residence. It was disclosed that Ricky had been last seen alive by family members on September 12, appearing well at the time. However, he failed to attend a scheduled event the following day, leading to Mr. Speak’s visit to collect him for a trip to Manchester Airport on the morning of September 14.
The senior coroner for South Manchester, Alison Mutch, stated during the inquest that despite significant future plans made by Ricky and the absence of any suicide notes, she could not ascertain intent to take his own life. She emphasized that the evidence, including his alcohol consumption and the presence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, left the intention unclear, resulting in a narrative verdict.
Ricky’s family described him as a devoted family man who cherished his loved ones. The coroner expressed her condolences to the grieving family, highlighting the profound loss they have endured. Ricky’s children were noted to miss him tremendously, underscoring the tragedy of a parent burying their child.
Moreover, the inquest revealed that Ricky had been dealing with chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain disease associated with repeated head trauma. Despite his struggles with alcohol and drugs in the past, his family believed he was in a positive place before his passing. The findings indicated a decline in his short-term memory over the years, raising concerns about his well-being.
The inquest further detailed the circumstances surrounding Ricky’s death, shedding light on the toxicological report that confirmed his elevated alcohol levels at the time of the incident. Additionally, post-mortem evidence unveiled signs of prior cocaine use and the presence of cannabinoids in his system, painting a comprehensive picture of the events leading to his untimely demise.
Ricky Hatton’s passing left a void in the hearts of his loved ones, as they continue to mourn the loss of a remarkable individual who left an indelible mark both in and out of the ring.
